Course PurposeThis course is designed to impart sound knowledge of Catholic doctrine on the seven sacraments through a series of lectures on sacramental theology supplemented by readings from and discussions of primary source materials. Thus the course particularly addresses the intellectual dimension of deaconate formation, while also being intimately related to the pastoral, and touching upon the spiritual and human dimensions (see the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States of 2004/2005). Along with sacramental doctrine, this course overviews traditional questions regarding the sacraments and summarizes their theological and liturgical history. Finally, students will become familiar with resources for studying sacramental theology and liturgical practice, particularly those available on the internet. Such resources will serve deacons in their ongoing process of self-formation and support them in their ministry of word, liturgy, and charity.
